Get a charge from the new BioLite

It seems that barely a day goes by without a new way to charge your gadgets on the road being invented.
However, the Biolite is probably the ultimate in innovation in this department. This amazing portable stove has a combustion chamber and insulated chimney and burns small sticks and twigs to produce efficient heat. The device separates the thin gas layer that burns around a solid fuel and adds it to oxygen to burn more efficiently. The ‘wasted’ heat energy from the fire is converted into electricity via a thermoelectric generator (TEG). This is then used to power a fan which pushes oxygen into the chamber creating hotter, cleaner more efficient combustion.
The Biolite can apparently boil one litre of water in 4.5 minutes.
The USB port on the front of the device is also able to draw its power from the heat of the fire, allowing you charge your phone, GPS, or LED lights.
It all means that your gadgets can always stay at peak performance even if you are well away from mains power, you’ve run out of fuel for the gennie, and your solar panels aren’t producing because it’s been hugely cloudy for weeks.
And, besides that, using the BioLite CampStove might be kind of fun. The device is 21 centimetres high and 12.7 centimetres wide, weighs just over 900 grams and retails at US$130.
For those of you tempted, the company does ship to Australia.
