WA ghost town set to host self-contained campers

Published: June 7, 2018

In a bid to attract more grey nomads to visit, the West Australian ghost town of Cossack could soon be welcoming self-contained travellers to park up for a couple of nights.

Two possible sites are apparently being looked at as places where RVs may be allowed to stay for 48 hours. Cossack is located 15 kilometres from Roebourne in the Pilbara region.

The Pilbara News reports that the sites being looked at are near Settlers Beach and Readers Head Lookout.

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said the plan was well supported locally, but would rely on the approval of the State Government.

“The City is negotiating with Ngarluma Yindjibarndi Foundation to look at allowing camping for fully self-contained RV vehicles for 48 hours,” he said. “We are hopeful as we always are, but we have spent many years and thousands of hours working on plans for Cossack.”

Mr Long said long-term plans would allow for businesses such as a distillery to open up in Cossack.

Some local landowners have been waiting for progress on the ‘Broome of the Pilbara’ vision for more than 20 years — progress which has been stifled by every level of government at various times.

One of them, Terry Patterson, told the Pilbara News that he was thankful the City was trying to cut through the red tape.

“Finally the potential of Cossack will start getting out there,” he said. “This is a start that will lead to other things.”

Cossack, which sits on the mouth of the Harding River, was a thriving port in the 1870s, but is now little more than a collection of historic buildings standing on an attractive shoreline. These buildings include the Customs House and Bond Store, the limestone Post and Telegraph office and the court House.

Yes and Yes and would more than likely return should the free camp go ahead.Stevo.

Free or low cost camping by the ocean is greatly needed in WA. Allow it and they will come.

Yes…Cossack has some great beaches nearby and a great lookout as well as the historical buildings.
