South Australia

South Australia has long been a favourite destination for grey nomads. It is vast and offers everything from the real Outback and one of the most famous wine regions in the world, to a city full of churches and a town where people live underground.

And of special appeal to long-term travellers are the fantastic camping opportunities available at so many national parks. You won’t forget visits to places like Innes National Park, or the Flinders Ranges, or the Coorong, or Kangaroo Island, of which a staggering one third is national park.

Of course, this is also the home of the legendary Oodnadatta Track which passes through a dry and desolate landscape littered with the occasional bore-induced oasis. The climate here is unforgiving. It can be extremely cool in winter and devastatingly hot in the summer. Just ask the opal miners of Coober Pedy who live in underground dugouts as a refuge from the unrelenting sun. This is a town full of stories and full of characters, and the same could really be said of the entire state.
