Victoria

Victoria is a comparatively small state but it certainly packs a fair bit of fun and adventure into its 220,000 square kilometres.

Most non-Victorian grey nomads cannot resist blowing the budget a little bit to sample the delights of the cosmopolitan capital, Melbourne. Who knows when you’ll next get the chance to eat out in Lygon Street, or watch major sporting event at the MCG or visit the Old Melbourne Gaol where legendary bushranger Ned Kelly met his end.

Some of the regional centres like the old gold mining towns of Bendigo and Ballarat, where the Sovereign Hill attraction is housed, are also fascinating destinations. But it’s impossible also to talk about Victoria without talking about its staggeringly beautiful coastline. The piece de resistance is the Great Ocean Road, one of the world’s most scenic coastal drives. This is one leg of your trip you will not want to hurry. Fortunately, there are some great places to stay along the way - like Otways National Park and the town of Apollo Bay – so there is no reason not to linger.

Inland, of course, flows the might Murray River and towns like Echuca offer a flavour of what it was like when the paddle boats were in their heyday and this superb waterway was the major supply line for the vast interior. And then there are the more wild areas ... the Grampians, Wilsons Prom, the alpine region. All this ... and some unbelievable camping spots, too. Can’t be bad, can it?
