Paynesville, Victoria
I could very much reccomend Paynesville [15 ks off to the left of Bainsdale Vic. on the Gippsland lakes in north east gippsland] as a great place to stop over. Hot shower toilet blocks in two spots on the lakeside of lake Victoria and plenty of free grassy space right on the water to park. No hassles from council or police and friendly people. Two Supermarkets, AGI and Foodworks available and there is also a Bendigo bank branch.

Fletcher's Creek
We planned to stay overnight at this beaut free rest area just north of Charters Towers off the Gregory Development Road but we stayed for a week. There are lots of spots to camp alongside the river and the atmosphere is relaxed and very social.

Windjana Gorge
I loved everything about Windjana Gorge in the Kimberley. The campground was spacious and scenic - and there was a separate area for people with generators. The gorge itself is beautiful and an easy walk from the camp. Even if you're not taking the Gibb River Road, it is worth taking a detour to see it.

Arltunga Historical Reserve - MacDonnell Ranges east of Alice Springs
We enjoyed having a look through the ruins of this old mining community. There is an information centre that provides visitors with lots of history - especially the hardships miners endured during the gold rush.
