The New South Wales of town of Dunedoo will soon boast a massive new tourist attraction with a champion jockey and a champion racehorse to be immortalised on its grain silos.

Hugh Bowman who grew up on a farm just outside the town, an hour or so west of Mudgee, will be painted on the local landmark alongside legendary mare, Winx.

“I left Dunedoo when I was pretty young and then when I left school, pursued my dream of being a jockey,” Mr Bowman told the ABC. “I’ve obviously had a lot of success and for that to be recognised, along with the champion mare Winx on the silos in my home town, is very, very humbling.”

Winx won 33 consecutive races, and those victories earned prize money in excess of $24 million.

It is hoped the silos, when completed, will draw more visitors to the town of just over 1,000 people.

The silo project has already proved more popular than the idea floated a few years ago of creating a ‘Big ‘Loo’ in Dunedoo.

“Personally I don’t think that would have been a great tourist attraction,” said Mr Bowman. “I hope the silos bring some activity and interest to the village, because it really is a beautiful town.”

The Dunedoo silos were bought by local farmer Brett Yeo four years ago when grain company Graincorp sold off 72 of its silos throughout New South Wales.

Thanks to a My Community New South Wales Government grant, the town now has $95,000 to spend painting them.

“It’s an excellent result,” said Mr Yeo. “Hugh will be part of the artwork, he’ll be a subject of it yes and we’ll try to also encompass some other themes; maybe a local theme and really try to develop it to represent the community.”

The monumental project will take six to eight weeks to complete with popular equine artist ‍Peter Mortimore tasked with completing the work.
