Top End of the Northern Territory (posted 24/5/10)
The North Australia Railway started off as the Palmerston (Darwin) to Pine Creek Railway in 1888. It eventually reached 500km inland to Birdum in 1929 in its quest to become the north-south railway. This is when it took on the label of being the NEVER NEVER LINE. Sadly it all folded in 1976 but it left a fantastic legacy of stories and historic sites. Our community based volunteer group FRIENDS OF THE NORTH AUSTRALIA RAILWAY cares for some of the historic sites and conducts events such as Rail Trail walks and the Annual Railway Picnic in August. Grey nomad caretakers look after some of the sites and do a fantastic job hosting visitors and generally caring for these historic sites. Some stay for 3 weeks and some stay on for 12 months or more. Some return year after year. Everyone has different skills and different talents.
We'd love to hear from grey nomads who could assist us at historic places such as Katherine, Pine Creek, Adelaide RIver and Timber Creek. Having your own van, a positive attitude and a smile are the essentail criteria. See our website www.northernexposure.com.au/rail for more background information. For enquiries please phone Trevor on (0417 838 578) or send him an email at t.horman@bigpond.com

Kilmore East, Victoria (updated 7/9/09)
Experienced sheep farmer(s) required to help run a 1,500 acre farm with 3,000 fine merino wool sheep and prime lambs.
The farm owners are the founders of Blaze Aid, a volunteer-based organisation established to help rebuild fences after the Black Saturday fires. (For more information, go to www.blazeaid.com) Since February, Rhonda and Kevin have been working seven days a week coordinating Blaze Aid (a full-time commitment) and running their sheep farm. They are hoping that a suitable person or couple can assist them in the day-to-day running of their property. Duties would include feeding sheep, monitoring lambing, checking water dams and troughs, fence maintenance, etc.Blaze Aid will continue until the end of October 09, so we are hoping to find volunteers for a few weeks or a couple of months to help out. At the completion of the Blaze Aid fencing program, Rhonda and Kevin would then like the volunteers to stay on for a short time while they take a holiday. We can organize caravan accommodation for you or you can bring a caravan, motorhome, etc to park on the farm. We have portable toilets and showers on site, with some power available through generators.
Breakfast, lunch and an evening meal can also be provided. The town of Kilmore is located 3 km away, with a large supermarket, medical facilities, banks and a number of other shops and services. Kilmore East is only a 40 minute drive from Melbourne, and there is also a train station a short walking distance from the farm.
If you are interested in volunteering in this position, please contact Kevin at kevrhon@gmail.com or on 0418 530 471.
Anyone interested in volunteering to build fences with Blaze Aid would also be most welcome – anything from a day to a few months. Go to www.blazeaid.com for information, or email kevrhon@gmail.com.

Our strong links with government, business and the community services
sectors will be used to match individual volunteers experience and

Katherine, NT (posted 12/6/08)
Travelling through Katherine? The VIEW Club of Katherine is scollecting pre-loved children's picture books to distribute to disadvantaged children in the region. We're keen to help Indigenous children learn
to love books! If you would like to donate a picture book (no novels please) it would be greatly appreciated and put to good use. You can drop off books with Petrena at Katherine Art Gallery on the main street of Katherine as you drive through.
Most of the students who will be supported by the donation of picture
books are Indigenous students from the most disadvantaged backgrounds.
Literacy and numeracy levels for Indigenous people in the NT are
appalling - 40% of children enrolled for school in the NT are
Indigenous, and of these only around 40% reach the national benchmarks.
Many parents are illiterate, so are unable to provide their children
with the basic reading foundation of one on one reading aloud to prepare
them for school. So the kids enter school way behind the national
levels and teachers struggle to get them even close. Your donation would be much appreciated. We hope you have a great trip.
