Just Grab a Tent and Go!

There are some amazing rigs out there on 'the track'. Some nomads have spent tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of dollars making sure life is as comfortable as possible on 'the big one'. You see 70-foot motorhomes, luxury caravans and sparkling new 4WDs. Then there are all the mod cons like TVs, fridges, computers and even washing machines.

You don't see many of the over-55s on extended trips in a simple tent but that's not to say they're not out there. Tasmanians Ann and Charles Parsons didn't plan their three-month around-Australia tour at all.

"I don't know what came over us," laughs Ann. "We just decided we were going to go. The next thing we knew we were buying a cheap second-hand car and a $1,000 tent and we were on our way. It was all done very much on the run. We picked up things like our self-inflating mattress, gas cooker, saucepans and other bits and bobs as we went. It's been great fun and we really have surprised ourselves."

But how is Ann coping with life in a tent? "Oh, it was a bit rough at first but now we've got everything pretty comfortable," she says. "It's starting to feel like home."

The Parsons have started taking their fishing seriously, as well, and are still elated from catching their first Barramundi. "Everything about this trip has just been fantastic," says Ann. "We've stretched ourselves and it feels good. We've already decided that as soon as we get home we'll start planning our next one.

"My advice to anybody thinking about going on an extended tour is get out there and do it. You don't need to spend a fortune … just get yourself a tent and go."
