Travelling into the Future

It's hard to feel sorry for someone who has spent his working life travelling to some of the most glamorous destinations in the world - but freelance writer Sean Thomas reckons it's the full-time nomads who are the lucky ones. He's been to Rio and London and Las Vegas and Paris and Rome - all in the same year - but says he's well and truly over it, now.

"It may seem strange to some people but all I want to do is stay in Australia and have a good look around with my wife Susan," he says ruefully. "Unfortunately, we're not yet in a position where we can pack in work and head off into the sunset in our motorhome."

Sean and Susan - who is also a writer - still manage to spend at least two months a year touring Australia, with northern Queensland being their favourite playground.

"I look at all of the other grey nomads and feel a bit of an imposter," smiles Sean. "It seems like I'm the only one who is still working. Sometimes, we're sitting around having a glass or two of wine and people ask us if we fancy meeting up in a few weeks time in Cairns or Townsville or something and we tell them we've got to go back to work. They look at us like we're from Outer Space.

"One day though, we'll be off. I've got to tell you that this is the only place to be and the only place to travel. There is no other country that offers the magic, the variety and the comradeship that Australia does."

And so say all of us
