Explosive sewer gas levels force van park evacuation

Published: October 10, 2019

About 100 people have been evacuated from a caravan park at Narooma in New South Wales after an ‘explosive’ gas level was found in the sewer system.

The Illawarra Mercury newspaper reports that Eurobodalla Shire Council workers were doing a routine check of the pumping station at Narooma Flat when they detected the dangerously high gas level.

A large section of the Narooma Easts Caravan Park was blocked off when the discovery was made yesterday, and people were prevented from returning while authorities waited to determine if fumes had reached safe levels again.

Vents were pulled off drains to ventilate the area.

A Batemans Bay Fire and Rescue Hazmat crew attended the scene and a NSW Ambulance crew was put on standby.

“We have found fuel which has potentially been dumped in the sewer system, so we called triple-zero to get the Hazmat crews here and now it is in their hands,” a Eurobodalla Shire Council spokesman told the Illawarra Mercury.

He reminded the public never to pour flammable liquids or chemicals down a sewer.

“Anything can happen; there is potential for an explosion in this instance,” he said.
