Camping ‘problem’ could see car park shut at night

Authorities in Queensland look set to crack down on the number of people camping ‘illegally’ in a popular national park on the Sunshine Coast.

Despite signs being in place warning visitors that camping is prohibited at the 64-bay car park at Noosa National Park, it remains a popular overnight parking spot for travellers … especially young backpackers.

One option apparently being considered to reduce the ‘problem’ is to end the 24-hour access to the car park currently allowed.

“Implementing regulated night time parking restrictions is one of a number of options Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service is considering to manage overnight stays by transient vehicle-based travellers and park visitors,” a Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service spokeswoman said. “No decision has been made with regard to regulating parking at Noosa Heads National Park car park.”

The Noosa National Park Team leader Dennis Massoud told the Sunshine Coast Daily newspaper that he had concerns about the effect the campers’ presence was having on the area and he supported the possible re-introduction of locking the car park at night as a solution.

“It used to be managed very well years ago,” Mr Massoud said. “The car park was closed at 6pm and they had gates on it.”

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service said rangers had not issued any infringement notices in relation to illegal camping in the car park in the past year. However, it said rangers had been active in moving on people who were camping in the car park.

Have set on the spot fines. Ranger visit early in the morning and a few fines should put a stop to it. What about wheel clamping ?

why not open a camp ground

the backpackers will not care in the least they don’t pay their fines anyway
