‘Only two weeks to go! We’re ready for NT warmth’

Kevin and son Aaron (insets) travel fulltime with their two cats

After many long weeks in virus lockdown, full-time grey nomad Kevin Kyle was over the moon to be able to get back on the open road again.

And he was happier still when the news filtered through that the Northern Territory was to re-open its borders on July 17.

Kevin – who travels with his son, Aaron – had just booked into South Australia’s Port Lincoln Caravan Park back in March when the announcement of the lockdown came.

“Now, Port Lincoln isn’t a bad place to be but, by the third month, the novelty starts to wear off a bit,” he said.

Kevin used his enforced time off the road to get his 20’ semi off-road caravan properly serviced and was ready to head northward as soon as it became clear that the Territory border was set to re-open in the not-too-distant future.

As they followed the road north, Kevin and Aaron spent eight nights in Whyalla and are now stopping at a roadside stop 80 kilometres south of Woomera for a few days.

“We’re glad we decided to move as the roads are quiet so far and we are the only ones here tonight,” said Kevin. “There were a few nomads at Port Lincoln, but they were all intrastate travellers.”

Kevin and Aaron, and their two cats – a 20-year-old moggy and a 20-month-old Manx – have been on the road for four years and tow their van with a 2006 v8 LandCruiser.

“Before Covid we were heading toward Western Australia, but it’s not practical for us this Issue 226: June 26, 2020 The only way is up late in the year,” said Kevin. “We will now make our way to Alice Springs, then over to Charters Towers, then back south to Port Lincoln for the Christmas break in December.”

Kevin and Aaron, who free camp most of the time, are certainly looking forward to finding some warmer weather … having been ‘scarred’ by previous experiences.

“We spent four months in Tassie a couple of years ago,” said Kevin. “And it was definitely the coldest summer I have ever had!”
