Many grey nomads love to make picking up fresh produce at a roadside fruit and veggie store and a chatting to the locals there a part of their Big Lap adventure … and they now have a new spot to stop on Queensland’s Cassowary Coast.

After dealing with floods and power supply problems, the Cairns Post reports that The Tropical Fruit Train at Moresby, south of Innisfail, is finally open for business.

Owner Bob Jenkyns and wife Sopha have been delighted with the early response to their new fruit and veggie venture.

“We’ve been open seven days now and it’s been great,” Mr Jenkyns told the Post. “We’ve been getting quite a few grey nomads come in because they can see from the highway that we’ve got plenty of room for caravans.”

Mr Jenkyns plans to build a house on the property and expand the new store, which he calls his family’s superannuation fund.

“We have growers supplying us with tropical fruits as well, including durians, jack fruit and mangosteens, and have plans to extend the store and sell grocery items,” he said. “So people will be able to pick up meat and fish and other items without paying supermarket prices.”

With 90% of his produce coming from Queensland, Mr Jenkyns told the Post shoppers were getting good quality fruit and veggies at great prices.

“A lot of stock is locally grown; probably the only things we get from way down south are apples and oranges,” he said. “And I’ve got a few other plans up my sleeve too, including supplying the grey nomads who stop here with tourism information.”
