The Billy

Part of the folklore of the grey nomad lifestyle is the idea of stopping to 'boil the Billy' but is it as simple as that?

"I spent the first two months of my nomad life wondering what all the fuss was about," admits Anne Perkins from the New South Wales Mid North Coast. "The first one we had just went rusty when we didn't use it for a couple of weeks and then we got one which just seemed to spill everywhere when we tried to put it in the cups. I almost gave up and used the jug in the van."

For Anne, however, the lure of campfire cooking was too strong and she persisted. The answer was a stainless steel Billy with a spout.

"I suppose it cost a little more," Anne says. "But we've been travelling with it for just over two years now and I love it. It's all blackened where it's been in the campfire and it's picked up a couple of dints along the way but it's the best reminder we've got of what it's like on the road. I'd be devastated if we lost it now."

Anne's perception that her Billy has taken on its own character is not untypical. Many travellers view their Billy as an important symbol of their trip, reminding them of all of the months they spent sitting around the campfire.
