Rig choices - What is Best for You?

motorhome dealershipChoosing your rig is perhaps the single biggest decision affecting your trip – other than the one to take it in the first place.

There are a massive variety of options out there. If you’re not sure just how many, simply take a stroll around any decent-sized van park in the right season. You’ll normally see everything from compact campervans and camper trailers to huge US-style motorhomes with slide out rooms. If you’re getting serious or at least seriously curious, stop to have a chat with that relaxed looking couple sitting under the awning with a book in one hand and a cup of tea in the other.

If you want the real story on any given rig you’ll generally find veteran grey nomads are only too happy to offer their insight and the benefit of their experience. You will soon learn that choosing a rig is a very personal decision. What is perfect for one person is a nightmare on wheels for another. Some people factor in fuel expenses more than others, some people simply must have size and luxury, some people hate towing, others need to be able to get down some rough tracks.

You will find that most people in the van parks will be happy with what they have chosen. Generally this is because they have either done their research thoroughly first, or because they have learned as they travelled and then changed rigs to something more suitable.

The difficulty that most soon-to-be grey nomads have is that they don’t know for sure how they are going to take to life on the road and what it is they are going to most enjoy. Pre-trip research can only take you so far, trial and error takes you the rest.

We were recently chatting to a grey nomad in a Coffs Harbour van park who had just bought a brand new genuine off-road caravan, complete with solar power and huge water-carrying capacity. Although he was just starting his journey, he knew that what he wanted to do was get out into remote country chasing fish and detecting for gold. His rig gave him the independence and self-sufficiency he had to have. In the same park, I spoke to a couple in a small campervan who just wanted to stay on the bitumen, and camp in towns and cities where they could enjoy going out for a meal every night. They didn’t care about spacious kitchens, or extra fuel tanks.

It’s horses for courses. Decide what sort of trip you want and then decide what sort of rig would best enable you to achieve that dream.  The links top right may give you a few ideas to start your search.
