Two people have been killed and two others airlifted to hospital after a car towing a caravan rolled on the Oxley Highway about 45 kilometres from Walcha in New South Wales.

It is understood the four were travelling in the one car when the crash occurred near the small community of Yarrowitch this afternoon. No other vehicles are thought to have been involved.

Specialist crash investigators are trying to piece together the moments before the horrific accident which happened.

The two fatalities were pronounced dead at the scene. No other details about them are known at this stage. A 38-year-old woman who was trapped in the wreckage for some time was eventually freed by emergency workers and flown to  Tamworth Hospital with head and spinal injuries and a suspected fractured arm.

A spokesperson for Ambulance NSW said a 58-year-old man also suffered minor injuries in the crash and was also flown to the same hospital in a stable condition by a second Westpac rescue chopper.

The Northern Daily News reports that police are remaining tightlipped on the investigation but confirmed the driver was one of those injured and flown to hospital.

The wreckage of the vehicles is being towed from the scene and will undergo a mechanical examination.

Police said a report would be prepared for the coroner.

  1. Terrible news…I wonder how compliant the van was ?

  2. It’s just so sad to see people lose their lives or suffer injuries on our roads. My heart goes out to the families and friends of those involved in this horrific incident. My thoughts also go out to the emergency service personnel as well.

  3. So sad to see carnage. Road was closed for such a long time due to forensics and accident investigation team trying to piece together what actually happened. Sad to see families torn apart. Maybe speed, too much weight, or not experienced in towing, who knows. Just so sad.
