Foot pump shower

The Nemo Helio Pressure Shower is perfect for the beach or the bush

For decades, the good old solar shower has been the best available clean-living solution to the bush campers’ dirty dilemma.

Left to lay in the Australian sunshine, the trusty water-filled bag is nearly always ‘ready’ to be hoisted into a nearby tree and then to deliver a warm, gravity-powered  shower. The only problem is there’s not always a suitable tree available and it’s not always easy for grey nomads to hold a full and heavy solar shower above their head while looking for a suitable place to hang it.

Meanwhile, over on the other side of the Pacific, the ingenious Americans have quietly been enjoying the best of all worlds, courtesy of the Nemo Helio Pressure Shower. Instead of having to be  located high up and then rely on gravity for water flow, this beauty can be left sitting on the ground and campers can use a foot pump to generate sufficient pressure to deliver a (fairly) powerful shower. And, when the pressure drops, the user can just pump a little more to restore it to full blast.

The tough polyurethane-coated polyester bag can be folded away empty into a small zippered carry case but, when opened up, will hold 11 litres of water which can apparently provide 5-7 minutes of steady water pressure. The device comes with a 7ft long spray nozzle so you can wash all over your body … or perhaps wash dishes, dinghies or dogs.

The designers says the bag cannot be over-pumped and, although it is not designed to soak up the sun’s heat like a solar shower, it can be filled with hot water heated in a billy over the campfire or elsewhere to give lucky  users that next level of  luxury.

The Nemo Helio Pressure Shower sells for US$99.95.
