Tragic end to search for man missing in Outback Queensland

Published: January 17, 2024

A man has been found dead three days after his vehicle became bogged in outback Queensland.

Police launched a major search on Monday after a 25-year-old South Australian man was reported missing in the Durham area near Queensland’s border with South Australia.

Police, SES personnel and mustering helicopters were involved in the search. Queensland Police have now issued a statement saying the man has been found deceased. They thanked the public for their assistance.

The man had gone missing after becoming separated from a friend along Woomanooka Road on Sunday. Information to police indicates the pair had been travelling in convoy when their vehicles became bogged.

They were walking to get help when the woman turned back and the pair became separated.

Search and Rescue Coordinator, Senior Constable Mark Baker, said it had been very hot in the area, with temperatures believed to be around 40 degrees on Sunday.

Police have been in touch with the man’s family.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
