Way back in the Spring of 1882, a group of 150 owners, managers and stockmen came together on the South Australian and Queensland border for the first – and unofficial – Birdsville Races event. And a legend was born. Today, the races are an iconic Outback event that draws 6,000 or so enthusiastic visitors form all around the country. Away from the horseracing itself, there is a smorgasbord or ancillary – and often wacky – happenings that all help to make this a must-do-at-;east-once-in-my -lifetime attraction for grey nomads.
