Kiama tragedy

If ever there was a situation which emphasised the need for utter care in driving in a caravans parks and camping grounds, then the horrific tragedy  which unfolded in Kiama on the New South Wales south coast is it.

An 18-month-old girl has died after hit by a car at Big 4 East’s Beach Caravan Park.  The child was treated by paramedics for abdominal and chest pains and abrasions before being air lifted to Sydney Children’s Hospital at Randwick where she later died.

A woman in her 30s – who is believed to be the dead child’s mother – was reportedly reversing her Mercedes people mover when the accident happened.

A woman staying at the park, who did not wish to be named, heard the mother’s screams and ran to her side.

“She was hysterical, I put her and her daughter in the car and we drove to the caravan entrance to wait for the ambulance,” the woman told the Daily Telegraph newspaper. “At Christmas time there’s up to 23 kids running around in that section, you can never be careful enough.”

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

I have long held the belief that caravan parks are more dangerous than the highway for children to play unsupervised. So many elderly drivers with failing eyesight and dexterity who have previously only driven the compact family car are piloting much larger 4WD’s with huge caravans blocking their view, some who still have no idea how to reverse them, inhabit these parks making it extremely unsafe for the unwary. Yet parents apparently feel they are safe because the are off the road. I have had kids on bikes ride between the car and caravan as I was back in on! Frighteningly!
