The Big Lap dreams of many grey nomads and other would-be travellers could have gone up in smoke after a huge fire at a facility in Tasmania.

A ‘large number’ of caravans are said to have been destroyed during the blaze early yesterday morning at King Trailers’ storage in Hobart.

It took crews about two hours to bring the inferno under control and the damage bill is likely to be several million dollars.

The ABC reports that local residents heard explosions and felt vibrations.

“I got woken by the sound of gas bottles beginning to explode, it was quite loud,” said David Gould. “Neighbours said down the street, closer to overlooking the site, their houses shook, so yeah it was a bit scary for people living close.”

Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) senior station officer John Holloway said crews immediately called for backup when they arrived on the scene.

“There were several new and older caravans stored in the area with various different types of trailers so it’s a significant cost to the tenant and the owner of the building,” he told the ABC.

The cause of the fire is unknown, with investigations expected to take some time due to the scale of the blaze.

“It’s possible it could have been some explosion from gas or other equipment used in the manufacturing and maintenance of caravans,” senior station officer Holloway said.
