Van park visitors to head ‘straight to the pool room’

Published: February 25, 2019

Grey nomad fans of ‘The Castle’ will be delighted to hear that the weatherboard house that was Darryl Kerrigan’s much loved abode in the hit movie has moved one step closer to a new starring role … in a caravan park.

The property famously saved from demolition in the Australian film is slated to become the caretaker’s residence at a van park developers hope to build at Beechworth in Victoria.

Although there are still some issues to sort through, staff at Indigo Shire Council  have recommended the caravan park planning permit application be approved.

The iconic home of the fictitious Kerrigan family  was bought by developer George Fendyk for $40,000 last year. He then had the house cut into our segments and transported 274 kilometres from its original location at Strathmore in Melbourne’se north-west to Mayday Hills in Beechworth.

At the time of the sale, the Property Observer publication reported that the re-constructed house would have a specially built pool room to mirror the movie’s famous reference point.

In his report to Indigo Shire council, planning and statutory services manager Ian Scholes said issues surrounding some of the developer’s plans would be dealt with at a later date. These are said to include concerns on still to be publicly revealed plans for farming land surrounding the proposed caravan park.

“Notwithstanding the issues with the master-plan, nothing was received that is considered to be detrimental to the assessment of the planning permit application,” he said. “For this reason the application is being returned to council for consideration.”

Among the objections raised to the proposal include noise, security concerns, and the construction of cabins in a second stage of the proposal.

Yes. I would love to see it as we love the movie. Just hope the pool table comes with it.
