Caravan rollover on Hume leaves two seriously hurt

Published: June 13, 2016

There has been yet another caravan rollover on an Australian road … but this time some of those involved have sustained serious injuries.

A four-wheel-drive towing a caravan lost control and rolled on the Hume Highway near Goulburn, this afternoon, about the 200km southwest of Sydney.

The male driver, a female passenger and two young boys – aged six-weeks-old and four – were all hurt. The woman and the youngest child are believed to have suffered serious injuries. The woman, aged in her 30s, was airlifted to Canberra Hospital, and the six-week-old boy was taken to Canberra Hospital by ambulance in a serious but stable condition.

Police say the Toyota Land Cruiser may have hit a guardrail on the southbound lane before spinning out of control and rolling.

The southbound lanes on the Hume Highway were closed while police investigated the cause of the crash, causing traffic to back up for eight kilometres at one stage.

There have been a spate of caravan rollovers in recent weeks. Just this weekend, two caravanners have escaped serious injury after a terrifying rollover on the Newell Highway south of Dubbo.

That scares me and I feel so sorry for them. So many people start the caravan life without really knowing how to tow one.
I just home the same thing does not happen to me when we start.

I read, too often, these stories about “accidents” involving my fellow Grey Nomads I never hear nor read the results of investigations into the event. It would be of interest to us all, and assist our preparation for a trip, and maintenance issues whilst on the road
