Dachshund found after a month missing in the bush

Published: September 19, 2017

Grey nomads who may have kept an eye out for the most famous missing dog in Australia will be delighted to hear that there has been a happy ending to what is basically a very sad story.

Almost exactly one month ago, Therese McCormack, 50, was killed when her car rolled about 15 kilometres north of Normanton, in north-west Queensland. One of the pet dogs in the vehicle with her was also killed, while the other, Millie the miniature dachshund, ran away into the bush.

Ms McCormack’s husband, Jim Palmer, who owns bakeries in Karumba and Normanton, was obviously distraught at the tragedy … but was intensely moved by the efforts of the entire local community and travelling public to help find the missing dog.

The ABC reports that searchers included helicopter pilots doing mustering, who had a look for Millie as they flew over every morning and afternoon. There were various reported sightings but, finally, a full 28 days after disappearing, Millie is back in the grateful arms of Mr Palmer.

She was spotted by someone walking their dog just outside of Normanton and caught by a local shop owner.

“Finding her took a great load off my mind after the accident. It’s a great relief. Miracles do happen, Mr Palmer told the ABC.  “A big thanks to everyone, all the volunteers who went out looking for her, including the helicopter pilots.”

Millie, who was apparently very excited to be reunited with her owner, lost 2.5kg during her month out bush.

a small ray of sunshine in a gloomy period, welcome home Millie

Lovely to know there are so many wonderful people out there. Finding Millie would have provided some measure of comfort after such a horrible tragedy.
