South Australia is showing the way ahead by becoming the only jurisdiction in the nation to open up caravan and camping operations again from next week.
Just a month or two after being told to ‘go home’ by much of regional Australia, grey nomads are once again being urged to head bush in the Festival state.
Premier Steven Marshall spelled out the new attitude.
“We’re going to be pushing ahead with changing our strong advice against regional travel – we’re not only saying it’s possible but in fact we’re encouraging it,” he said. “We want people to get out and explore our beautiful backyard and spend money in regional South Australia and help those economies move forward and create jobs.”
The Adelaide Advertiser reports that local and regional travel is part of the first phase of the Federal Government’s three-step framework to reopen Australia’s economy by July.
Step One involves intrastate travel starting again. The next step would see the consideration of interstate recreational travel, depending on each state and territory’s situation. The third phase allows for all interstate travel to open up.
With overseas travel off limits for the foreseeable future, the hope is that tourists will instead opt to spend their travel dollars in their home state.
South Australian Tourism Commission chief executive, Rodney Harrex urged residents to take the opportunity to travel in their own backyards.
“Let’s redirect some of the $3.3 billion that South Australians spend on overseas holidays back into our state and into the pockets of our 18,000 tourism operators,” he said.

Hi Gary. As far as I am aware travel into South Australia remains only available to essential workers e.g. freight carrying truckies, who have had just had extra record keeping commitments placed on them (recording of contacts etc). Ray

Yes, however you will be required to quarantine after crossing the border for 14 days.
It reads Intrastate, meaning within the state only.
Here is a direct quote from SA Government website in regard to Arrivals from Interstate:
Border control check points are operating for traffic entering South Australia. You will be questioned regarding your travel plans. SA Police are also patrolling border areas and will stop people they find deliberately avoiding main roads.
Non-essential travellers will still be able to enter South Australia, but will be required to
– identify a suitable place of quarantine
– travel directly to that location
– self-quarantine at that location for 14 days

SA Police are conducting periodic checks on people who have returned from interstate to ensure they are complying with the mandatory 14 days of self-quarantine.
