An inquest into the death of a British tourist at the Northern Territory’s Kings Canyon has heard that the tragedy occurred as the young woman climbed down to a famous ‘prank photo’ hot spot.
Zoe Woolmer, 23, was on a guided tour last June when she joined a group of others in descending to a rock ledge at the Kestral Falls lookout, where it is possible to mock up a shot which gives the impression climbers are clinging to the cliff.
It is not clear what caused Ms Woolmer to fall but one witness described her as ‘stepping on air’ before plunging 15 metres to her death.
Ms Woolmer was among a group of 16 tourists taking part in a three-hour rim walk of Kings Canyon. One of the issues the inquest will look at is whether the training for the tour guide was adequate, particularly as she apparently showed tourists how to slide down to the cliff edge to take photos.
Despite the death of another English tourist at the same spot back in 1996, and signs warning people to stay away, some tour operators have continued to guide tourists on how to get to the ledge.
The inquest is continuing.

unfortunately some guide mobs do encourage people to do silly stuff
