A woman has lost a hand and forearm after being attacked by a crocodile near a caravan park in the Kimberley in Western Australia.
Karen Prior, 68, lost her arm below the elbow during the incident which happened on Wednesday while she was walking at Three Mile Creek behind Wyndham’s port and shopping district. She also suffered several puncture wounds to her left leg.
She is currently in a stable condition after undergoing surgery at the Royal Darwin Hospital.
Parks and Wildlife authorities later captured and killed the 2.2metre reptile responsible and retrieved body parts.
“We have dissected the crocodile and removed the human remains from the stomach, the lady’s hand and arm,” WA Parks and Wildlife Ranger, Peter Carstairs, told the ABC. “The animal was deemed as a problem crocodile so we had to remove and destroy that crocodile and ensure that we have in fact got the right crocodile as well by dissection.”
The area where the attack happened is said to be a key estuarine habitat and traps have been set to make sure there are no more crocodiles moving in to take over the dead saltie’s territory.
