Moves are afoot to allow free camping at a popular lake close to the iconic Queensland town of Mount Isa.
The local Water Board is considering the policies surrounding recreational use at Lake Moondarra and, in particular, the possibility of allowing camping. There is a sense in some quarters that the full potential of the lake is not being unlocked, and there is demand for more camping options in the region.
According to a report in the North West Star newspaper, the nearest campsite to Mount Isa is the East Leichhardt Dam, 25 kilometres east of the town but is not suitable for caravan access. The paper says the next closest campsite is Clem Walton Park, 76 kilometres east of Mount Isa.
While there was some concern over issues such as littering, the newspaper reports there appears to be broad community support for allowing camping at the artificial lake, which is about 16 kilometres out of Mount Isa.
The ‘oasis’ is already a popular spot for with anglers, boaters and picnickers.
Mount Isa Water Board chief executive Stephen Farrelly told the North West Star that the service provider had a duty to ensure the safety and quality of the town’s water supply was protected. However, the water board was also quick to acknowledge that allowing recreational pursuits was important as it understood “how much everyone enjoys this special space”.
Written feedback from the community is formally considered when the water board forms its by-laws.

If boating etc. is already allowed, there must be at least toilets available. People caravanning will be more responsible as most carry a toilet of some description. If a dump point is available on the side of Mt Isa nearest to this lake Moondara, then travellers and campers would be responsible and use it. Also a large skip bin for rubbish at the lake would encourage proper disposal of rubbish.
We would support any town which makes us welcome. There are many towns that are not RV friendly and they are bypassed by nomads. Good on you Mt Is in advance .
Great idea great spot for free
Has Lake Moondance actually been opened fr overnight caravan camping we are coming to Mount Isa in the near future
No , this is a popular camping area used by locals . Locals have been pushed out of clem Walton park , rosebud and increasingly East Leichhardt by tourists . Clem Walton Park is shoulder to shoulder with caravans during tourist season . Tourists are finding there way into other areas and crouding tourists out . Enough is enough . Leave our lake alone. It is used year round by locals and is mount Isa’s best family asset .
Thanks Mount Isa for allowing us nomads to camp at Corrella Dam, beautiful spot.
Good on the council.
