Is the Outback still too hot to handle for grey nomads

Published: February 25, 2016

While many grey nomads will soon be contemplating a move north, the sizzling temperatures still around in the southern states suggests they shouldn’t be in too much of a hurry.

The tiny New South Wales town of Tibooburra near the South Australian border is set to hit 42 degrees today. And, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, the town’s average temperature during summer is 36C with the mercury rising to about 40C at least 20 times.

While most caravanners and motorhomers find the weather too hot to handle, it seems the locals aren’t too sympathetic.

“Life goes on,” Tibooburra Family Hotel publican, Melissa Thompson, told the Mercury newspaper. “You just have to deal with it!”

But she says there aren’t too many grey nomads game enough to sample the summer sizzle, with tourism dropping off dramatically.

So, how do the locals cope when they’re not in one of the town’s two pubs or swimming at a dam?

“I’m used to the heat,” said Ms Thompson. “But I still like my air conditioner!”

I have been on a motorbike in 54C half way to Uluru at Curtain Springs.
Lucky I never killed myself and someone had to take my helmet off for me and put me under a tap.
I was only in early 30’s then so think may have helped.
