The Bruce is named most dangerous in Queensland

It’s a result that probably won’t comes as a shock to most grey nomads who have travelled on it, but the Bruce Highway has been named Queensland’s most dangerous road.

The RACQ said the condition of the notorious highway elicited the most complaints from disgruntled motorists, although almost 450 roads were nominated in the 2016 survey of ‘untrustworthy’ roads.

“It was nominated for rough, narrow conditions, congestion, and sections which are constantly cut off by floodwater,” said RACQ spokesman, Paul Turner.

According to a report in the Brisbane Times, eight out of the top 10 worst roads were highways.

It said drivers were also sick of congestion problems and a lack of overtaking lanes on the Mount Lindesay Highway, south of Brisbane, and the crash-prone Captain Cook Highway north of Cairns.

The Pacific Motorway, and Rickertt Road, on Brisbane’s Bayside, rounded out the top five.

The purpose of the RACQ survey is not just to find out where the poor roads are, but to help the government ensure it is focussing funding in the right areas.

Bruce Highway is short on passing lanes in the north. The Burnett Highway is an absolute shocker for towing a caravan on, in places is narrow and rough bitumen with the speed down to about 60 km/h unless you want to repack the caravan at the end of the day.

I have to agree. The Bruce “Highway” is anything but a highway. It is an embarrassment to the current , previous and any future state government. The Federal government should also take responsibility for the condition of the this road. The Bruce Rd it my lifetime (67 years) has NEVER been in a condition that warrants being called a highway. I travelled this road for about 20 years and it has not changed very much in that time.
