Grey nomads travelling on remote highways and byways become accustomed to coming across the occasional solo hiker or cyclist … most of whom are as prepared as they can be for the rigours of their marathon adventures.
However, that is not always the case. Police have grave fears for the safety of a German backpacker who is feared missing in Outback Western Australia.
The man, believed to be aged between 20 and 30, is understood to have left Carnarvon just under a fortnight ago to walk the more than 400 kilometres to Mount Augustus on his own.
Police say a station hand came across the man on Saturday when he was about 100km east of Carnarvon and he had very little food or water with him. The backpacker said his name was Daniel.
A land and air search is now under way.
Police have appealed for information from anyone else who may have met him during the trek.
