‘Flood nightmare won’t stop us living our dreams!’

Published: June 7, 2016

The worst of the east coast’s mega storm may have come and gone but, for many grey nomads, its effects will be felt for some time to come.

This is the sight that greeted soon-to-be grey nomad Steve B when he looked in on his motorhome (far right) at a storage facility in Sydney’s western suburbs. The banks on the creek about two kilometres away had burst, causing localised flooding and bringing heartache to many travellers.

“It’s very sad that there are many others in the same boat!” said Steve. “The van next to mine is just over a month old …  I just feel so sorry for others that have lost their vans – many more than is seen in the photo.”

Steve himself is retiring next month and his motorhome was all set up for his future adventures on the open road.

“The motorhome has only done a couple of shakedown trips and we only just finished getting all the bits and pieces done ready for the bigger trips,” he said. “There is only about 2,500 kilometres on the clock.”

While the vehicle itself is insured, Steve says it is all the ‘extra’ bits that often take the time, money and effort to set up just how you want and need.

“We just need to see how bad it is and get on with fixing or replacing,” he said. “We expect that we will be well and truly in the red with the extras that are not insured.”

As part of his retirement plan will be moving back to Queensland after 30 years of living in Sydney.

“If it was this time next month the van would have been garaged at home in Brisbane,” he notes philosophically. “Oh well!”

So sorry for the people who have been caught in these horrible floods. We were just home at Brisbane in time from our 15 week trip on the road. If it hadn’t been so cold and windy at South Australia en Victoria, we would have been caught in the monster storm as well. But because we couldn’t stand the cold windy weather we drove in in one go from Anglesea Victoria to Eden NSW and because of that we are home 2 weeks earlier and home before the storm hit.

Hi,
Just to let you know that all three vehicles above plus at least another dozen were written off by Suncorp today.

Stephen
