Will segregation solve campsite party problems?

Published: July 26, 2016

By and large, grey nomads have a well-deserved reputation for being respectful towards their fellow campers and for strictly observing the 10pm (at the latest) noise curfew.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean they are always extended the same courtesy by those they share space at campsites and caravan parks with. Many older caravanners and motorhomers are particularly careful about where they camp during the traditionally more ‘boisterous’ periods such as the school holidays,  and when they are close to major town or city on the weekends.

Of course, issues surrounding camping etiquette breaches are not restricted to Australia … and one or two innovative solutions have been tried overseas.

In Iceland, tourists at a popular campsite in Flúðir in the south of the country are routinely given refunds after being disturbed by the drunken antics of locals. In an effort to minimise the dramas, management has now divided the campsite into two sections …  one for peace-and-quiet loving tourists, and one for more party-seeking visitors.

Giorgia Tallaoure, an employee at the Flúðir campsite told the Morgunblaðið newspaper that the campsite in a pretty woodland area was getting busier and that complaints about partying campers had risen sharply.

“Tourists obviously want a quiet spot because they’ve been travelling all day and we’re trying to make everyone happy,” she said. “No one has complained about the separation, it’s a large camping site.”

  • Should Australian campsites be divided into sections for those who want to make noise and those who want to enjoy peace and quiet? Have you ever had a night in paradise ruined by inconsiderate campsite neighbours? Comment below.

Yes me thinks it is a good idea.

NO. People would not put up with noisy neighbours in a housing suburb so the same rules should appy in caravan parks. Camp sites are just that and not for loud and wild parties. Some campers stay for more than one day. It also would affect the nearby town as caravans would more on and not spend money in town or at the park (if not free park).

Wouldn’t make a lot of difference at night as sound travels better. Better giving the potentially quiet ones a big discount and make the potentially noisy ones pay a bond. No complaints, bond returned. Hip pocket hurt can work.

We have been on the road for over eight years and we find the most annoying residents are those in slamming door vans.

Some arrive late and decide to knock up a meal and then spend the rest of the night on Skype talking loudly to the friends in Germany or wherever. We once had one van with three backpackers as neighbours who slammed the door eight times in one hour.

Keeping the backpackers away from the main camping area would be a move in the right direction.
