The anonymous Victorian man who recently unearthed a ‘colossal’ gold nugget worth $250,000 is going to celebrate in style … by joining the ranks of the grey nomads.
A veteran treasure seeker who has been searching for coins, relics and gold on weekends for more than a decade, struck gold when he dug up a 4 kilogram nugget which he at first thought was an old horseshoe.
Using a Minelab GPZ 7000 metal detector, the man heard the sweet sounds of a find as he criss-crossed a worked-over section at the far southern edge of Central Victoria’s Golden Triangle.
“About 12 inches below the ground, I could just barely make out the top of something … I thought it was rubbish at first,” the man told the media. “As I began to scrape away the clay and dig deeper, I really couldn’t believe my eyes — this wasn’t an old piece of steel in front of me.”
The lucky prospector will honour a pact he made with his treasure-seeking friends to divide the proceeds of any large find they made when out together.
When he finally gets his share of the money, the man plans to buy a caravan and travel Australia indefinitely, while continuing his hunt for treasure in remote parts of the country.
The giant gold nugget is now safely sitting in a bank vault while a replica is being constructed and auction plans are made.
