Two men who spent three days stuck in remote country after their 4WD became bogged have vowed to take an electronic tracking device with them the next time they head out for an adventure.
The Westpac Life Saver helicopter plucked Darren Inglis and Scott Alcock from bushland on the New South Wales South Coast last week as their supplies for a planned two-day camping trip began to run low.
The duo was crossing a creek in the South East Forests National Park, near Bega when their four-wheel-drive stalled. The Illawarra Mercury reports that, with the vehicle partially submerged and no mobile phone reception, the pair was forced to sit tight.
They knew not to walk too far from where they were stuck and immediately started rationing their food but, as the days rolled by, they began to wonder if they would ever be rescued.
“Your mind plays tricks on you when you’re out there because we thought we could hear four-wheel-drives every night but it was just the wind,” Mr Alcock told the Mercury.
Even when the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter hovered overhead, they thought it might just be water flowing over the creek bed.
“I’ve never been so happy to see a helicopter in my life,” said Mr Alcock.
