It may come as no surprise to grey nomads but new research has just revealed that the secret to happiness is spending more time in the Great Outdoors.
The research commissioned by the Great Northern Brewing Co found that, of the men who were satisfied with the amount of time spent outdoors, 75% were also happy and satisfied with their lives. However, of the men who wished they could spend more time outdoors, only 11% were satisfied with their lives.
The study also found that 48% of all men surveyed said they had forgotten how good it made them feel to spend time connecting with nature, and that 72% wished they could spend more time fishing, camping or hiking.
Scott Lathlean was fairly typical. He told the NT News that he has been fishing for 15 years and that getting outdoors helped him find his Zen.
“I think it helps keep our sanity and going out and spending a bit of time with nature gets us back to our roots and reflect on what is amazing about this country,” he said.
Some 61% of those surveyed said one of their favourite childhood memories involved interacting with the natural Australian environment.

Maybe the Aboriginals had it right after all. Live off the land, lead a nomadic lifestyle and build your temporary home from whatever materials are at ground level. These dwellings can then be transferred back to the environment before you move on. No mod cons or money required. Bushman skills is all that is needed and oh, yes, roam around in the best areas of real estate in the country.
