Caravan blown over by high winds on bridge

Published: October 30, 2016

Strong winds have caused a caravan to flip as it crossed a busy bridge in Tasmania.

While the van was a refreshment vehicle rather than a grey nomad rig, its dramatic demise will still send a shudder down the spine of drivers of high-sided vehicles everywhere.

No one was injured when the van flipped on Hobart’s Bridgewater Bridge this afternoon.

“It is believed strong wind has caused the caravan to flip over,” police said in a statement.

The drama came only hours after high winds caused a car to come off the road on the outskirts of Hobart.

In a statement on its Facebook Page, the owner of ‘Decadent Drinks and Delectables’ wrote:

“I am deeply saddened to inform everyone that our caravan had a dream. It dreamed of soaring the skies like a bird. And, sadly, this dream became a reality!”

The statement goes on thank the emergency services for recovering the caravan from the bridge quickly and safely, and promises that – while the caravan would be out of commission for a while – it would be back.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Alex Melitsis said Tasmania’s windy conditions would continue Monday and Tuesday, the winds would not be as severe.

“For Hobart it’s going to be a bit blustery, a lot cooler and we’ll see the odd little shower blow in from the west … with sunshine in between,” he said.

Yes we also had an experience with a big gust of wind on our way to Exmouth WA late in September 2016 our caravan turned over and the Colorado finished on the R/H side ( both total losses) We were lucky to walk away thanks to our seat belts. We were so lucky to have the Volunteers assist us out of the wreck .The ambos and Firies are to be congratulated for the work they do .
We also wish to say the hospitality of the business and their staff in Exmouth renewed our faith in humanity Photos are available if req.
