The Eyre Peninsula is the latest part of regional Australia to realise that working harder to attract more grey nomads and other travellers can pay handsome dividends.
A new study on caravan and camping options in the region has identified that visitors to Eyre Peninsula jumped by 16% between 2012 to 2014 … and numbers are still climbing. The data also showed a rise in grey nomads who are looking for greater value on holiday, as well as those seeking ‘back to basics’ and ‘nature-based’ experiences.
The report, from Regional Development Australia Whyalla and Eyre Peninsula (RDAWEP) is asking the region’s councils to contribute up to $40,000 to develop a regional strategic framework for caravan and camping on the Eyre Peninsula.
Tourism development manager, Brad Riddle, told the Port Lincoln Times that options needed to be offered to all sorts of campers in order to capitalise on the opportunities.
“Tourists are expecting a variety of accommodation types, particularly in this market, from bush camping with no facilities through to caravan parks with four-star accommodation available,” he said. “The market is changing and we need to ensure the product and experiences are meeting the consumer expectations.”
He said a new strategy could help promote the Eyre Peninsula as a sustainable and active ‘camping community’.
“With the right approach there is no reason why this region cannot become the South Australian destination of choice for camping, caravanning and RV users,” he said. “It is about ensuring as a region we meet the future needs and expectations of the market to get the maximum economic benefit.”
The Port Lincoln Times says that the tourism sector contributed more than $300 million to the Eyre Peninsula economy in 2015 – including $65 million from caravans and camping – employing more than 3000 people directly and indirectly.

Pretty much in the area at the moment. I know a few good free ones and will only be using those unless I need something. I baulk at the camps that are $10 and offer nothing but a view.
