Massive bushfire burns near Tom Price van park

Published: October 15, 2017

The nightmare start to the bushfire season continues as an out-of-control blaze burns along Nameless Valley Drive, directly south of the caravan park at Tom Price in Western Australia’s north-west.

About 13,000 hectares have already been burnt, and people are being told to leave or be prepared to actively defend their properties.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has issued a watch and act warning for the 100 or so permanent residents of the Wakathuni Aboriginal community, and says the bushfire may threaten lives and homes.

The ABC reports that roads remain open, but Nameless Valley Drive and Nanutarra Road have reduced speed limits to 50km/h and motorists are being asked to avoid the area, and drive carefully due to smoke.

A bushfire advice warning has also been issued for people in the Tom Price town site, including the Tom Price mine site, and residents and travellers in the area are being urged to keep up to date in case the situation changes.
