Are roads less travelled due to poor conditions?

The number of grey nomads visiting the Northern Territory’s iconic Kakadu National Park in the early part of the tourist season is apparently significantly lower than usual.

Some operators have accused the Northern Territory government of turning its back on tourism in favour of other industries … with the condition of the roads in the park a particular concern.

Al Williams, who owns the Bark Hut Inn on the Arnhem Highway, told the ABC that roads to major park attractions have been neglected and, in a number of cases, are still closed. The Bark Hut Inn is a popular stop for tourists heading to Kakadu but Mr Williams says he has seen far fewer customers this year.

“While everyone is talking up the gas and the oil, which is fantastic for the town, it’s probably only going to affect a small percentage of the people in Darwin, whereas tourism affects virtually everyone,” he told the ABC. “And I think if Darwin starts to turn its back on tourism the pain is going to be widespread.”

The Northern Territory Government says road maintenance in the Kakadu National Park is a federal issue.
