The small Western Australian town of Collie is to build a toilet block and dump point … but it is yet to decide whether it will charge grey nomads and other travellers to use the facilities.
Like many small communities, Collie – which is about 60 kilometres inland from Bunbury in the southwest of the state – is eager to do all it can to attract caravanners and motorhomers.
The shire council has just voted to approve the construction of a toilet block and wastewater dump point at the Eddie Woods Memorial Park truck stop on Throssell Street. It has voted to award the contract to Modus Australia to design and construct the facility.
The Collie Mail reports that at its recent meeting, the council debate centred on whether the facility should include shower facilities, and whether there would be a cost involved for users of the facility.
Councillor Joe Italiano said including the shower facilities was important for Collie in becoming more RV friendly, but some councillors claimed that maintenance and cleaning of the shower facility would be too costly.
There was also discussion about whether there would a cost involved for anyone wishing to use the facilities.
The Collie Mail reports that Shire chief executive officer David Blurton said that the tender didn’t include any payment systems, such as coin-operated or swipe-card systems, and that the shire would look into whether the facilities should be provided free of charge.
Ultimately, the shire approved the tender contract with the shower facilities included, however it didn’t include the connection of the facility to a wastewater system, which will be the responsibility of the shire.
The shire has previously received $75,000 for the project and will have to fund the remaining $74,131 through a loan.
If you buy petrol in town, or do a food shop, then maybe the store can give a token piece and then the facilities are free……but if the person is just travelling through, and does not support the town, then make it a coin machine and charge.
Hi yes I would be happy to pay for a shower but why don’t you put paid timer in like 5 min for two dollars, then you don’t get the freeloaders in who have a half hour shower.
Yes I would be very happy to pay $2 into a timed systems, to cover electricity, cleaning etc.
Great idea
Yes sure would ,happy to pay a small fee
The cleaning and maintenance on this block will cost the council, so of course charge a fee, to know you could stop and have a shower in a well maintained facility, go to the toilet that has paper and been cleaned is worth paying for. For goodness sake in Europe and other overseas country’s it is standard to be charged to go to the toilet or use a shower, why is it such a big deal here?
Happy to pay a small fee, as we don’t have toilet or shower. normally we would pay $3-4 dollars to access the swimming pool if there are no facilities near by
If you shop/ pub you get a token for showers., if not spending then buy a token. Tokens would stop bandels stealing the money.
Happy to pay $5 to dump waste and refill water tanks.
Think $5 is very reasonable for a hot shower.
No worries pay a fee say $2 for a five minute shower at a well kept clean facility. I could see some tight rse showering together to save. I don’t go for the token idea even if you shop or fuel up ect you are helping a small business, getting a token for buying something you need to get a free shower ect is like being an Indian giver. As pointed out above it is common overseas to pay for faclity’s as was in Australia in the 70’s.
Any how each to themselves.
Make them pay a fee to cover cleaning etc
Build it and we will come, and yes more than happy to pay a couple of bucks. Not only that willing to support the small community of Collie if this service is provided.Stevo.
Yes I agree with your memo, build it we will come hopefully in 2018
$2 for shower = 5 mins
$4 for dump point.
That way it can go directly to pay for those services and the upkeep
I a man happy to pay $10 per day if everyone does that then spend some as well it’s a go go system
Also put in shower meters
Yes. I think $10. 00 per day would be Fantastic for everyone. Most people will be happy to pay that.
