Queensland’s peak motoring body has welcomed the State Government’s announcement it is to commence a two-year trial of real-time petrol price reporting in Queensland.
Under the scheme, all fuel retailers will be required to publish their latest prices on their own websites within 15 minutes of any change.
RACQ spokesperson Paul Turner said Queensland motorists, who paid some of the highest prices for fuel in the country, would be empowered with the information they needed before filling the tank.
“The announcement means every Queensland driver will be able to find out the price of fuel at every servo every 15 minutes – it’s a huge win,” Mr Turner said. “Lower fuel prices start with increased competition, but you can only take advantage of the cheapest prices if you know where to go – this real-time system will deliver that to motorists.”
The RACQ says it has long been telling motorists to buy from the cheapest retailer, but transparency over prices just hasn’t been available to them and many have been ripped off in the process.
“This puts the power back in the hands of the motorists rather than big fuel companies,” Mr Turner said. “Now it’s over to us as drivers to make sure we use this data, support the cheapest servos and help ourselves by driving down prices.”
Organisations, like RACQ, are expected to use this data to build apps and websites to give motorists up-to-date real-time fuel prices.
The RACQ says it is looking forward to being part of a working group which will oversee the implementation of Queensland’s fuel price monitoring system.
Nothing will change. Fuel companies do not care what the Qld Gov does or thinks. I have just come from Bunderberg to Townsville. Just south of Mackay fuel 1.35/lt…. Mackay 1.39.9 and Townsville 1.43 and up. How is it that a sml operator in the middle of nowhere can charge over 10c less than cities. He gets his fuel from the city, he pays delivery and yet is cheaper. No nothing will change.
what a load of garbage sounds good on paper and that is where it ends.
As Laurie said nothing will change, they treat us like idiots. Do you honestly think this will stop us getting ripped off. NO.Its the world we live in, be it power prices.fuel prices or whatever the government is not interested in helping the consumer, its what they can get out of it.Stevo.p
A 2 year trial is just an overpaid couple of jobs for a couple of mates from the Government. “Jobs for the Boys”.
And after 2 years everybody will have forgotten about these studies.
What a lot of BS.
