A motorhome careered the wrong way down an American highway for a full 20 minutes after the elderly driver suffered a suspected stroke.
Incredibly, no one was injured in the drama on Highway 97 in the US state of Oregon. Police say that at least 15 oncoming cars and trucks were forced to veer onto the shoulder to avoid a head-on collision.
According to local media, the northbound motorhome towing a car trailer with a sedan on it started travelling in the southbound lane of US 97 just north of the town of Klamath Falls.
A law enforcement officer attempted to stop the motorhome using his emergency lights and siren. However, newspapers say that – even as the trooper followed it with lights and siren on – the motorhome continued north in the southbound lane, forcing several more cars, trucks and buses onto the shoulder. This continued for about 10 kilometres before the driver finally noticed the trooper and stopped.
The driver, an 83-year-old man from Arizona, is believed to have suffered a stroke and was taken to hospital for treatment. No legal action will be taken against him.
