For grey nomads seeking to avoid the scorching summer heat, there really will be no place to hide this coming week.
The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting daytime temperatures of up to 12C above average, and 10C higher than usual at night from Monday to Friday. Some regions across the country will see the mercury soar to above 40 degrees.
According to local media, Marble Bar in Western Australia has already registered more than 24 days straight of 40C and above.
A widespread low intensity heatwave is expected from central Western Australia to southern parts of the Northern Territory and southwestern Queensland, as well as parts of Tasmania and Victoria, through the week.
South Australia is already sizzling and severe heatwave conditions are expected for most of the state between Tuesday and Thursday. Most of eastern New South Wales will also swelter through an extreme heatwave, with the rest of the state experiencing severe conditions.
A total fire ban has been put in place across Victoria as temperatures are expected to hit the mid-40s in the north of the state.
Victoria’s Emergency Management Commissioner, Andrew Crisp, said planning for extreme hot weather was important, particularly as there are still large number of people camping and visiting national parks.
“It is important everyone stays vigilant and don’t light camp fires,” he told 9 News. “There won’t be much relief from the heat overnight on Tuesday, meaning if we have fires in the landscape they could challenge firefighters.”
