RV-only daytime parking area set to open in Mt Isa

Published: May 6, 2019

After weeks of work, Mount Isa’s much-anticipated grey nomad-friendly parking area is due to open tomorrow.

The new parking area will allow up to 15 caravans and campervans to park near the shopping centres, freeing up other parking spots for standard vehicles. However, the council stresses stresses it is for daytime parking only, and no overnight stops would be permitted.

Parking will be limited to between 6am and 9pm each day, with a sign to be installed at the entrance informing motorists of the parking conditions.

The sealed car park facility at the base of the Frank Aston Hill opposite KMart Plaza will only be available to caravans, campervans and RVs.

The North West Star newspaper reports that a litter bin will be made available at the site, but there are no toilet facilities or access to water.

Pedestrian access to Rodeo Drive will be via a set of stairs or ramp midway along the area.

Solar street lighting will be installed over the next few weeks.

All tourists, visitors and travellers are welcome to use the facility, but are asked to ensure they leave the site in a clean and tidy manner and show courtesy for other fellow users when parking.

The newspaper reports that council’s Parks and Gardens team members will be undertaking beautification work at the site over the next week.  The entire project cost $85,000.

Yes, hopefully they do. It is always difficult to find a park suitable for a van close to shopping centres so we can off load our hard earned money to a towns small business. Often, we bypass larger town shopping centres due to the lack of suitable parking and stop at another town that has. Well done Mt Isa – Excellent!!!

Parking can be difficult to find for a caravan, cameras and motorhome when you are travelling so what the Mt Is a Council has done for travellers to their city is fantastic. Let’s hope users respect the areait by obeying the rules.

One thing I’ve been wondering is whether or not such spots also allow camper trailers which, although being self-contained, are a different category altogether. Does anyone on here know the answer?

I think the intent is for folks to be able to do their shopping without clogging up the streets or existing carpark outside the Coles plaza. So you’d be fine…
