The cause of a crash that claimed the life of a campervan driver in Tasmania on Sunday night is still being investigated.
A 43-year-old man from Queensland died when his Toyota HiAce campervan crashed head-on into a prime mover on the Tasman Highway at Nunamara in the state’s north.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Examiner newspaper reports that the 27-year-old male truck driver, was taken to the Launceston General Hospital with minor physical injuries.
Crash investigator Senior Constable Michal Rybka said the van was driving on the incorrect side of the road for some time before the crash.
“We are still investigating that but we believe a member of the public had been following the vehicle and trying to signal it to pull to the correct side for quite some time,” he said.
Drugs, alcohol and a medical condition are being investigated as possible causes of the accident.
The Examiner reports that the crash happened on the eve of the National Road Safety Week, prompting a reminder from police to all drivers.
“Be alert, don’t drink drive, obey the speed limits, wear your seatbelts and be attentive,” Senior Constable Rybka said.
