Camel swerve crash puts Outback driver in hospital

Feral camels often wander onto roads in the Outback

A frightening accident near Uluru has underlined once again the real threat that wandering wildlife poses to grey nomads on remote Outback roads.
Northern Territory police say a man is in hospital being treated for suspected spinal injuries after he rolled his car while swerving to avoid camels.
The man was apparently driving on a dirt road at Yulara when several camels walked in front of the car.
“A camel crossed the path of the driver,” said Watch Commander Mel Edwards says. “The driver’s swerved and another camel has then come from the right causing the driver to swerve again, which ultimately caused the vehicle to roll.”
The male driver was evacuated to Alice Springs Hospital.
Watch Commander Edwards told the ABC that animals pose a major threat on Northern Territory roads.
“I can only reiterate to any person … that (they) need to drive not only to the conditions here in the Territory but be fully aware of the wild animals,” she said. “Whether they be camels or kangaroos that may come out in front of your vehicle.”
