Western Australia’s hard borders finally come down at midnight, and a steady stream of grey nomads and other travellers have already crossed the ‘frontier’.
The ABC reports that there were about 30 vehicles queueing up to be among the first non-essential travellers in many months to be able to head west without quarantining.
Under the new ‘controlled border’ rules, people from all states and territories except Victoria and New South Wales no longer need a special reason to travel to WA and will not have to quarantine on arrival.
They will still need to make a declaration they are not unwell or symptomatic and have not travelled in New South Wales or Victoria in the previous 14 days.
Travellers will also need to register their travel arrangements on the state’s G2G PASS app.
People from NSW and Victoria will be required to self-quarantine for a fortnight and take a coronavirus test on Day 11.
Media reports say that many of the early vehicles travelling into Western Australia today contained grey nomads who were either returning to their home state after being ‘trapped’ in the east, or just long-term adventurers eager to explore the west.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Scotto Morrison reaffirmed that all states and territories (apart from WA) were committed to having all border restrictions eased by Christmas.
The WA Premier Mark McGowan has indicated he would not hesitate to put stricter border controls bac in place if there were a significant increase of Covid cases in other jurisdictions.
