Kangaroo attack a brutal reminder of wildlife danger

Published: December 3, 2020

Grey nomads can get used to seeing kangaroos around the campground … but a brutal attack on a jogger in Victoria serves a frightening reminder that the marsupials are not as cute and cuddly as they look.

Tracy Noonan says she thought she was going to be ‘clawed to death’ after a kangaroo assaulted her while she was on a run in the outer Melbourne suburb of Beaconsfield.

The incident happened on Saturday when the large creature bolted towards Ms Noonan, eventually knocking her to the ground before scratching her back.

The woman told 3AW that she had desperately tried to get away from the violent roo.

“I just turned my back and covered my head and I just felt a massive thump in my back and it’s hit me in the back,” she said. “I’ve fallen to the ground and I turned around and it was actually just standing over the top of me … ‘I thought ‘oh my goodness this kangaroo is going to kill me’.”

Ms Noonan managed to throw a rock at the roo, giving her enough time to run up a driveway and seek refuge at a local residence. She stayed there 20 minutes while she calmed down but, when she tried to leave, the kangaroo was still waiting!

“It was something out of a horror movie,” said Ms Noonan

A park ranger told her he believed the roo was attracted to her due to her Sarah Jessica Parker perfume.

“It’s so funny because who wears perfume on a run? No one,” Ms Noonan said. “But it was early in the morning and I was fumbling around for deodorant and that was all I could find, and I had sprayed perfume on myself … I was not trying to attract any kangaroos, I can assure you that.”

The perfume possibly carries a mating scent that is close to that of roo’s. An animal senses a reproductive cycle instinctively.
