Sunshine Coast ‘free camp’ is free camp no longer

Published: December 10, 2020

Queensland’s Sunshine Coast Council is warning would-be campers that a former hinterland free camping site is a free camping site no longer.

Apparently, multiple complaints have been made to the council and the police about people still trying to spend the night at Obi Obi Creek crossing number 2 at Kidman Creek.

This despite the fact that the council has installed new signs at the to remind visitors that it is not a designated camping area any more. The site, popular for swimming and picnics and also known as Bonney Park, is for day use only.

“Following complaints received by council and Kenilworth police regarding people camping in the parks, signage was installed to advise that camping is prohibited,” a council spokesman said. “Bollards were also installed to deter vehicle access from unauthorised areas.”

So what did you replace it with? New site must be of equal attraction. Australia’s population is growing and aging. We need more free egalitarian sites not less.

Perhaps if previous campers had not disrespected this lovely spot, then everything would have stayed as it was.
We have travelled past many times and seen the mess left behind.

The fact the population is growing is the very reason these places are disappearing. Too many take them for granted and overuse and abuse. The good old days are over mate. Sad but true.

Greedy campers staying way too long in free camping sites, not taking there rubbish away has been going on for too long and stuffed it for the rest of us. I’m over picking up other peoples rubbish, and yes the good old days are over.

Have people noticed that camp sites now are a lot cleaner now with no overseas backpacker vans . I know honest Aussie tourists don’t leave the mess but others do. Unfortunately the mistakes of a few the rest are punished.

You are being fully aware that there are also honest backpackers and absolutely disgusting Aussie travellers and locals especially, aren’t you? There’s not just not as many overseas tourists but also not as many national tourists.

Why aren’t people prosecuted for littering? In Austria, an on the spot fine is issued – something that should be implemented here.
Austria’s waste laws are extremely strict, as they should be here in Australia. Time to review waste policies downunder ASAP

I stayed here a night in January 2019. It was just my fiance and I and a group of sketchy locals who were dirty (themselves and the area they were camped out in.) The river was beautiful though and there were local families swimming during the day. The bats were really really cool. Sad this spot is no more due to disrespect.

Don’t worry Ranger, us Californias on a WH Visa definitely cleaned up after ourselves and what was left in the site when we got there, it’s the backpacker way – pack in, pack out – even if you’re car camping. Respect the Earth. But there was no way we were going to approach the dirty van of locals. There is a difference between backpackers who pay money for a WH Visa and then tax money once we have jobs, and pick your food for months (the Mexicans of Australia) so we can extend our visas to keep paying taxes and boost the Australian economy — from those who are in Australia for a week on vacation and rent a camper van but don’t want to pay for campsites b/c they are expensive after renting the van and $40/night campsite fees and aren’t used to the fact that a 16 beer pack costs $50.

@CentralAU – New Zealand’s free campsites MUST be self-contained with the sticker, or the fine is massive. I’m sure AUS has a similar system of fining littering, it’s just a matter of catching the creeps like those locals who were there when I was there. Hard to do in the outback.
